Amberrose Venus-Gordon currently resides in Bronx, New York. She is a recent graduate of Pratt Institute with a BFA in painting and her minors were art history
museum and gallery practice. She is currently pursuing her MA in Arts Education at Adelphi University.
Amberrose’s interest in working with children and her sensitivity to them is apparent in the way she records moments in their young lives. Amberrose’s profound love of capturing one’s youthfulness seeps into her carefully felt work., It focuses heavily on iconic symbols that are indicative of one’s childhood. It recalls a time of one’s innocence.
Biography
Anastasia Pruden graduated from Suny Suffolk Community College with an associate degree in photography. She continued her education at Suny New Paltz and achieved her bachelor’s degree in fine arts. Being born in Siberia, Russia, she had a challenging childhood living in an orphanage. At the age of ten, she was adopted by a loving family who gave her a brighter future, a different way of looking at life. Anastasia, like many children with ENL backgrounds, school was challenging. She found her creative passion with the encouragement of her parents to pursue her love for the arts.
Anastasia’s true calling was her love for photography. She has exhibited her work locally at the Fotofoto Gallery in Huntington and at the Art League of Long Island in Dix Hills. Anastasia traveled to both Gubbio, Italy and Japan with her former Suffolk Community College professor Alisson Rufrano exploring photography experiences abroad.
Presently, Anastasia is employed by the Special Education Department through the Harborfields School District as a teacher assistant for elementary special needs children. Working in a school environment has inspired her to pursue a master’s degree in art education. Anastasia loves experimenting with cyanotype in her free time.

Art has always been important to me. In times of stress I often turn to art as a means of relaxation, joy, or escape. As an educator I want kids to be open, resourceful, and creative and I believe art fosters these attributes. As an educator I try to let the students lead as much as possible. I try to say yes as often as possible. I teach film and videography to middle school
students and I never want to say no to their creativity. ‘Yes and’ allows us to expand and move forward in growth instead of stunting their process or embarrassing them. There is no wrong way to do art. This is what I hope to instill in my students.

As an artist and teacher I try to embrace imperfection. Rather than putting undue pressure on myself and stifling my creativity I let myself play. I don’t worry about mistakes, and try to encourage my students to work from a place of discovery and positivity. I think this outlook comes from growing up with a learning disability, where “simple” tasks were a chance to fail and I would just run at them all head on. Images were my way of expressing myself, but also how I understood the world for a large portion of my childhood.

Ash Nadeau comes from an illustration background having studied at Savannah College of Art and Design. She had a passion as an artist from an early age and decided to turn it into her career. While in college, Ash realized she had a passion for children's illustration whether it was for books, surface design, or textiles. For her, the power in children's illustration came from inspiring others and showing people there is so much possibility in the world. Along the way, Ash also realized she had developed a love for teaching and wanted to pursue the world of art education to do exactly what she aspired to with illustration. She firmly believes that art is at the foundation of the human experience and that everyone should have access to visual art as means to express themself and build connections with people around them. As an educator, Ash strives to show the world the important role art plays in life and wishes to show her students how powerful and deserving their voices are of being heard.

Baylee Napolitano is a twenty-two-year-old creative-expressive artist from Long Island, NY. She has received her bachelor’s in art therapy in 2021 from Marywood University and is currently working towards her master’s in art education through Adelphi University.
Through her bachelors, she was able to experiment with every medium and material under the sun and discovered her passion for pottery and expressive painting. Through college, Baylee has found the importance on taking in the process of her artmaking and less on the final product. Mindfulness is an important tool we can all utilize to be fully present in our work and create with intention.
In hopes to becoming an art educator, Baylee aims to encourage purpose and meaning for her future students and provide a healthy, creative environment to express their emotion within their artwork.

Despina Zografos is a visual artist, born and raised in Greece currently living and working in New York. Despina works in a variety of mediums including hand cut paper, acrylic painting, cyanotype, solar plate etching, photography, video and has received awards for he work.
In 2022 she was a mentee at NYFA International Immigrant Artist Program and a Resident Artist at the Art League of Long Island, Dix Hills, NY. Selected group shows include: “Alchemy” Create!Magazine, online, (2023), “Long Island Biennial” Hecksher Museum of Art Huntington, NY(2022), “Art on Paper” Fair, NYC, (2022) Despina exhibited her work at The Other Art Fair, Brooklyn (2021). Public collections include: Yuko Nii Foundation, Brooklyn, NY, Minos Mare Resort, Rethymno, Greece. Growing up near New York City, I have spent my childhood visiting museums and falling in love with art. My love for art grew in high school where I was lucky enough to receive a Distinction of the Arts diploma and continue down that path to receive my BFA in Art Therapy from Endicott College. As an artist, my interests include the themes of self identity, freedom of expression, and creating art to fulfill one’s happiness. I believe making art is about the process rather than the product. If we are always creating to please others, we lose ourselves as artists and the love for the craft. As an aspiring art educator, I hope to instill this in my students and be their biggest supporter. Hello my name is Erika Leigh Gordon. I'm an artist and art teacher from New York City. I create in my spare time water landscape paintings. I also love to do my sketching in watercolor paint. I teach grades one through three at the Yeshivah of Flatbush in Brooklyn, New York. I love seeing the spark of creativity in my students. The aha moment when they learn something new. It’s a very rewarding experience. I think all of my students should be able to experience all the arts have to offer. We have art all around us, it's not only creating but enjoying what has been imagined and created around you. When we put all subjects on the same footing and importance we will find a lot more students have the courage to express themselves. Not only in the arts but a lot of my students find their voices in the classroom. As a student I loved hanging out with my art teacher and helping with lessons. It helped me learn and find a lot more responsibility at a young age. I also helped with the theater department in making the stage sets. Which showed me another way I could use my creativity for a job. I'm not musically talented, I did enjoy in elementary school learning how to play the stand up
bass. I gave it up by high school but I was given the opportunity to try. That's what is most important, CHOICE.

I am a Fine Artist living on Long Island, New York. I graduated from the University of Southern California, Roski School of Art & Design. I majored in Fine Art with an emphasis in Oil Painting and a minor in Cinematic Arts as well as Psychology. With a strong love for film and a particular interest in psychology, I explore the psychological effects that arise in the visual design choices of art through colorful, immersive, and conceptually narrative art. Liz de Planta is a self-taught figurative artist who spent 25yrs as a documentary filmmaker before swapping her camera for a paintbrush.
Light is key to film and painting and Liz is constantly searching to reproduce the beauty light brings to life and to re-present it in a two dimensional form with the credibility to transport the viewer into the painting.
"Look up in Wonder" was copied from a photo Liz took and painted in the studio but Liz is now endeavouring to paint ‘en plein air’ - outdoors - which is ridiculously difficult, given how the light changes everything every second of the day.

When it comes to art and all the arts at school I find that most students find their voices in those particular classrooms. The importance of having every subject on equal footing is that you’ll find students who are struggling in a regular classroom setting thriving in a specialty space. When we give them the opportunity to make choices for themselves and give them the right tools to do so, we will find all the beauty that is made in the process. This is why I thought Jessica Hoffman Davis’s quote was perfect for World Values Day. It explains very bluntly that constants are created when every subject is on equal footing.

Artists can fight for the arts over and over again, but as we fight, we need to change the negative opinion of the pessimists who say quotes like “The arts are nice but not essential to education or to life.” Everywhere we look is a form of art, and it needs to be appreciated and supported rather than undermined and ignored.

I titled this work “adapted” and selected this quote by Ignacio Estrada because as a special education teacher this is the core value of my teaching. Every single student shows unique challenges that need to be respected and taken into consideration. Understanding the differences in the way people learn is so important. Not seeing rules, just making, and waiting to see how it would turn out. Never having used embroidery floss like this it was an interesting process breaking through the thick watercolor paper. This drawing shows what life is like in low income areas known as "townships" in South Africa. These areas are predominantly occupied by the black population of the country and are plagued by many societal ills such as alcoholism, extreme poverty and broken homes. Values of community and "ubuntu", which used to be integral to black communities in SA, are no longer held in high regard in these townships, perhaps because people are too disheartened to care. In this drawing, I aim to inspire our communities to bring these values back by showing what our lives in the townships are.

Weeping is a 8x6 small graphite drawing that consists of quick and jagged strokes and almost an impressionistic styling. I used a sort of repeated stroke and flick of the wrist movement that is supposed to represent sporadic leaves and the ‘Weeping’ tree.
In my ongoing continuous series I wanted to not only touch on my personal struggles, I wanted to be able to relate to not only my students with their struggles but genuinely be able to help them. In the small series, I wanted to show parts of the tree that sort of represent someone who is weeping or is sad, I personally look at my work every single day that remind me of my personal struggle with day to day activities. The simplicity of colors make the drawing look heavy, while the white space counter that heavy feeling. There is nothing in the drawing that you can focus on except the fact that someone is encapsulated by the tree. I wanted to highlight things in my drawings that one may see everyday, things that may not look like anything to you, but can be alarming to others.

I have chosen to title my work, “Art is Connection.” I chose this quote after viewing some quotes by Maya Angelou and reading some of her poetry. I chose a quote from her because I have always been inspired by her words. I love this quote because it reminds me that Art is an expression of human creativity, and it reminds me that we connect with each other through our artwork. Great art is timeless because it allows people to see and be seen by each other. I enjoyed making my poster for World Values Day 2023.

I recently went on a trip to Yellowstone with my family for the first time. This trip was more than a vacation for me. I was on the hunt for inspiration. I wanted to find a purpose, and direction that I felt was lacking in my life. I was also in search of a theme for my paintings. On our way we stopped in Ellensburg, at the Yellow Church Café, and I was struck by the stain glass artwork on display. Stain glass is an art form I have always loved and admired, and then I suddenly realized I had my theme. I was looking for a way to see inside myself and discover what I’m all about, and if a large part of who we are is the sum of our values then a window theme made sense to me. Each painting tries to represent the different aspects of each ValYou and how they all come together to make something beautiful. They aren’t perfectly symmetrical, and clean. There are flawed with touches of color that may seem out of place. For me the imperfection is part of what makes them interesting. I imagine my paintings as windows of a mind sanctuary where I can go and explore what it means to be me. I’m pretty happy with how they turned out.

I wanted to use Elliot Eisner’s quote “The arts celebrate multiple perspectives. One of their large
lessons is that there are many ways to interpret the world.” as a way to show the ties between science and art, specifically paleontology. I wanted to show how artists have used scientific knowledge that was current at the time, to display the fossils of extinct creatures. I have drawn one of the first dinosaurs ever discovered, megalosaurus as it was described in 1824, and then I drew a comparison for what megalosaurus looks like in 2023.

I was first inspired by NIkki Giovanni's quote as I was researching the right words for this assignment. I was not too familiar with her work so when I investigated more I found an American poet, a writer, activist and educator. One of the world's well known African American poets. Her work includes storytelling, poetry anthologies, poetry recordings, covering ranges of topics from race and social issues to children's literature. She also published an amazing set of
poems, along with Illustrator and artist, Ashley Bryn in 2018, called I Am Loved. Like many of us, she gets her inspiration based on the facts in her life experiences.
I found so many great quotes by NIkki Giovanni. The quote I finally chose resonated with me because I always find art to retreat to. It has always been somewhere I can go and kind of hide. Whether it was singing my heart out and allowing my emotions to burst out in song to even this assignment. The quote goes “A man’s reach should exceed his grasp or what’s a heaven for? This quote inspired me because it’s true. People should aim not only to be good at what they put time and effort into but also put in the time to learn new skills and expand there knowledge and abilities.

It contemplates freedom and safety both of which are necessary to truly become who we are supposed to be. We need safe spaces in order to thrive. We need positive relationships that model behavior and give us feedback. When our hearts and minds are aligned, we can weather storms and are more resilient in the face of change. Rush hour at the beach is all about seeing the sunset. The sky is teeming with flying fish and angels of various sorts. Some wear top hats and cravats, others carry umbrellas and wear their finest jewelry. Dolphins dance and turtles cheer. Even the palm trees exclaim in excitement at the parading spectacle. It's about coming together as a community and celebrating, while giving thanks to those that came before us and those who protect us now.

Seattle native, Jahnavi Stackhouse (Navi Jah) is an experimental mixed- media artist and visionary. Her art is stemmed from the universal patterns that flow through her dreams and travels, and blossoms from her utmost interconnectedness with the Universe. Her vision was refined when she graduated from Antioch University in 2015 with a BA in art and after being connected with the United Creations team during her two quarter internship. By studying art therapy, Navi Jah hopes to inspire people to live creatively and more in tune with their creative flow through her art and she is highly interested in having a healing impact on her audience with her art. This particular series of paintings reflect the seven ValYou Symbols: Abundance, Kindness, Growth, Community, Passion, Synergy, and Inner- Peace. She was inspired individually by each ValYou symbol and their meaning and then, connected the meaning to poetic imagery. Throughout these seven paintings, she weaves her own personal story with each and uses repetitive shapes and lines to echo each of the ValYou symbols.

Student voices need to be heard through the Arts. When their emotions cannot be expressed in words alone, that’s where they visually convey their feelings. As a secondary special education art educator, I want my students to be able to express themselves through their projects. The following quote by Jessica Hoffmann Davis strongly summarizes my feelings about art, and how it allows my students to convey their non-verbal emotions. Whether it be through printmaking tools, sharpies, or tactile materials, it’s all relevant. Speak is about how we let our artworks tell others who we are and build necessary connections.

The poster is inspired by an Elliot Eisner quote. I chose this quote because it gives an evocative
statement with brevity. I wanted to make a piece about how art comes from the heart and that there's
passion to be admired whether it is viewed as high brow or low brow art or created by a child or an adult.
Each person's heart is different and the beauty of art is peering into the soul of the artists and seeing something different each time. I wanted to capture the chaotic beauty of experiencing art.

The quote I chose, from education researcher Elliot Eisner, inspired me because “artist’s block” is a real struggle that all creatives face, especially students who may not have confidence in their work. Inspired by classroom posters, the non-textual elements of this piece are meant to have an abstract, simplified style, telling the story of a boy finishing a piece of art to show
others, ending with him receiving praise. I chose to use a monochromatic blue color scheme so that the starry background and the illustrations would evoke a cozy atmosphere, in contrast to the stark yellow of the text.

The quote, “The arts matter. They matter to education; they matter to society; and they will matter to you” inspired the creation of my piece for World Values Day. I used this quote to create multiple pieces, each focusing on a different medium. The piece above, Art Matters, is composed of a photograph of a trumpet, overlaid twice. The blending layers have been changed on Photoshop, and linear shapes of differing blending layers were added on top of the overlay. The quote was added in a similar fashion. My goal was to abstract common mediums, and to transform the photographs into more complex, multifaceted pieces. In this way I was able to show different uses of artistic mediums and styles to bolster the point of the quote, that art matters. This piece is composed of photography, music, graphic design, and illustration. I wanted to use many artistic mediums to prove that art can be anything, and it all has an important place in society.

The title of my work “Soul Honey” was inspired by the quote “Art is the honey of the soul” by Theodore Dreiser. Honey is the stored nectar for bees, it sustains them, protects them from bacteria and is necessary for their species survival. I immediately felt a connection to Dreiser’s quote. Art and its many expressions, has helped me process my way through life, through ups and downs and has been the nectar I live off of when things are hard. It provides light and inspiration to our spirits. Art helps us remember, it helps us heal and it is what our soul needs to thrive in the world.

Vince welcomed the opportunity to do art again after years focusing on his family and growing his Mount Bakery business in Bellingham. He sees his work as a celebration of life and he refers to it as positive propaganda. Joyful expression of people and ecology uniting to create change is a central theme. “Art Is A Lie That Tells Us The Truth” is a quote I chose from Pablo Picasso. The “lie” refers to the representation, how does the artist create the artwork. The “truth” is referring to the deeper emotions and ideas that the art is describing but you can’t necessarily see. It allows artists to create in a way that isn’t so literal and the viewer will unravel the deeper meaning. In the artwork I wanted to incorporate a darker part where the words finish off and begin pixelated for the viewer to wonder...”why, what is the truth here...”

“Art is for Everybody”, said by Keith Haring immediately became part of my teaching philosophy the first time I read it. Such a simple sentiment that truly carries so much weight. There are so many avenues that one can access and utilize the arts for themselves, their community, and humanity at large. Keith Haring believed that since all art, whether intentionally or not, is inspired by ones community, it
therefore should be accessible to it. The openness of all that the art involves and can achieve is my biggest inspiration.

What some people don’t know is that learning the arts actually helps improve skills that may help students in other subjects. My poster titled “Arts Provide Essential Learning” is meant to draw attention to this. It features a bold font containing a series of miniature studies of famous artists Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, and Michalenagelo. I titled this work “adapted” and selected this quote by Ignacio Estrada because as a special education teacher this is the core value of my teaching. Every single student shows unique challenges that need to be respected and taken into consideration. Understanding the ifferences in the way people learn is so important. I used watercolors, paint pens, and photoshop. I wrote the quote in both Hebrew and english! The background contains the tree of life showing how student growth can be achieved if the teaching is student centered. The color gradients represent the low self esteem many students struggle with due to their learning differences.

I am a special education art teacher at a jewish day school in manhattan! I work with
students with learning disabilities particularly dyslexia and ADHD. I am passionate about teaching all different types of learners in my classroom! Art is an incredible place where students can thrive. In my personal art practice I explore ideas of Jewish identity and do textural paintings as well. I love experimenting with mixed media and varying textures. I explore beauty through texture, color, and layering.

The importance of having every subject on equal footing is that you’ll find students who are struggling in a regular classroom setting thriving in a specialty space. When we give them the opportunity to make choices for themselves and give them the
right tools to do so, we will find all the beauty that is made in the process. This is why I thought Jessica Hoffman Davis’s quote was perfect for World Values Day. It explains very bluntly that constants are created when every subject is on equal footing.

Hello my name is Erika Leigh Gordon. I'm an artist and art teacher from New York City. I create in my spare time water landscape paintings. I also love to do my sketching in watercolor paint. I teach grades one through three at the Yeshivah of Flatbush in
Brooklyn, New York. I love seeing the spark of creativity in my students. The aha moment when they learn something new. It’s a very rewarding experience. I think all of my students should be able to experience all the arts have to offer. We have art all around us, it's not only creating but enjoying what has been imagined and created around you. When we put all subjects on the same footing and importance we will find a lot more students have the courage to express themselves. Not only in the arts but a lot of my students find their voices in the classroom. As a student I loved hanging out with my art teacher and helping with lessons. It helped me learn and find a lot more responsibility at a young age. I also helped with the theater department in making the stage sets. Which showed me another way I could use my creativity for a job. I'm not musically talented, I did enjoy in elementary school learning how to play the stand up bass. I gave it up by high school but I was given the opportunity to try. That's what is most important, CHOICE.

Art not only has an impact on cognitive mind skills but also the ability to create pieces that, over time, get more and more advanced. Every time a child makes a piece of artwork they are working all of the skills necessary to create something amazing while also improving their judgment and self-awareness. This painting “Growth of a Young Artist” shows my personal growth as an artist. Almost every child starts where I started, hence the children's drawing in the background. But, not everyone can work with and understand oil painting and color theory.
When I was a child, I continued to drawand paint because my teachers encouraged me to keep pushing. Over time, my skills as an artist advanced drastically. Even today, my skills are getting more and more detailed and original (even if I'm not trying to be).If all children continue making art, we would have a society full of more aware, intellectual, creative people. This has been recognized by professional artists, children's art has been praised and blamed for the creation of great artists.

As an artist and educator, I am always looking at life through many different lenses. Life is all about perspective. Our reality is based on our perspective and our perspective is based on life experience. Art gives a person the opportunity to examine reality, what may be, and what could be. This quote spoke to me because as an artist, that is what I do, I present images using different perspectives, offering the observer a different eye fostering a different experience.
In this piece I used a cyanotype with mixed media to juxtapose what is real with what is abstract.
Biography
Anastasia Pruden graduated from Suny Suffolk Community College with an associate degree in photography. She continued her education at Suny New Paltz and achieved her bachelor’s degree in fine arts. Being born in Siberia, Russia, she had a challenging childhood living in an orphanage. At the age of ten, she was adopted by a loving family who gave her a brighter future, a different way of looking at life. Anastasia, like many children with ENL backgrounds, school was challenging. She found her creative passion with the encouragement of her parents to pursue her love for the arts.
Anastasia’s true calling was her love for photography. She has exhibited her work locally at the Fotofoto Gallery in Huntington and at the Art League of Long Island in Dix Hills. Anastasia traveled to both Gubbio, Italy and Japan with her former Suffolk Community College professor Alisson Rufrano exploring photography experiences abroad.
Presently, Anastasia is employed by the Special Education Department through the Harborfields School District as a teacher assistant for elementary special needs children. Working in a school environment has inspired her to pursue a master’s degree in art education.
Anastasia loves experimenting with cyanotype in her free time.

Her 15-year journey in the corporate world allowed her to work with huge brands such as Nickelodeon, Mattel, Marvel, Coca Cola, working in both 3d and 2d software as well as with physical print materials to create visual experiences that stir humanity to act.
Along this path, her strong desire for building healthy communities remained thus leading her to further her studies and self-study, this time in Iyengar yoga, Hypnotherapy and facilitation - leading to her collaboration with other wellness coaches to co-host outdoor yoga events and workshops and taking on various hypnotherapy clients suffering from addiction and poor self-worth.
Her online community, EarthborneYogi, is based on the 3 pillars of movement, thought & nature to bring well-being. The harmony of these allow us to re-discover our most natural and individual path to wellness.

For my World Values Project, I decided to make an artwork based on the quote “Art is literacy of the heart” by Elliot Eisner. This quote particularly resonated with me because I feel that it truly captures the essence of art’s profound impact on our emotions and understanding of the world. Just like how reading and writing enhance our intellectual literacy, art nourishes are emotional and empathetic literacy. To convey this idea, I made an ink illustration of an anatomical heart with flowers and vines sprouting out of it to represent the life and beauty our heart can produce. Embedded in these flowers and vines is the text.

Hi, my name is Margaret; art education is one of my greatest passions in life. Being given the opportunity to teach children and experience their creativity in all forms is an amazing privilege that I cherish deeply. I have personally chosen this quote by Elliot Eisner because I truly believe that no problem or question has one definitive answer. When working withchildren you will never find two that think and conduct themselves in the exact same manner, so I believe you need to teach each individual child how to problem solve in a manner tailored to them. The idea that questions and problems have multiple answers allows for children to find a solution in a form that best fits them. This encourages exploration and independence, which are two things I believe every child needs in their life!

I created this piece for this poster because ever since I was a child, I loved fairies.
Recently, I discovered that they still bring me joy and creating art around this topic is also helping me to heal from childhood trauma that I experienced growing up. Fairies represent childhood innocence and imagination, and I really wanted to bring that into this poster. The quote I chose correlates with the fairy idea so well, and to my personal story as well. I’m finding my inner child again through my fairy artwork, and this poster is a representation of that.

Katlego is a visual artist based in Johannesburg. Initially embarking on a career in accounting, he quickly realized that its confines stifled his creative spirit. In 2019, Katlego decided he no longer wanted to be an accountant and wholeheartedly embraced graphic design as a self-taught discipline. In his own words, art flowed through him effortlessly, and in his creative process, he sees himself as an architect constructing a visual language that transcends conventional boundaries.

I had chosen the quote “The arts, it has been said, cannot change the world, but they may change human beings who might change the world”by Maxine Greene. This is partially the reason why I create; I want the viewer to get lost in my piece, maybe it leaves them puzzled, wanting more, or become so engrossed in the idea of what they believe the significance of my work to be. This lets me know that my work has impacted them in some way shape or form. Maybe it sheds some light on an idea they had never imagined or it encourages them to think outside of the box but it leaves them forever changed.

Amberrose Venus-Gordon currently resides in Bronx, New York. She is a recent graduate of Pratt Institute with a BFA in painting and her minors were art history
museum and gallery practice. She is currently pursuing her MA in Arts Education at Adelphi University.
Amberrose’s interest in working with children and her sensitivity to them is apparent in the way she records moments in their young lives. Amberrose’s profound love of capturing one’s youthfulness seeps into her carefully felt work., It focuses heavily on iconic symbols that are indicative of one’s childhood. It recalls a time of one’s

Baylee Napolitano is a twenty-two-year-old creative-expressive artist from Long Island, NY. She has received her bachelor’s in art therapy in 2021 from Marywood University and is currently working towards her master’s in art education through Adelphi University.
Through her bachelors, she was able to experiment with every medium and material under the sun and discovered her passion for pottery and expressive painting. Through college, Baylee has found the importance on taking in the process of her artmaking and less on the final product. Mindfulness is an important tool we can all utilize to be fully present in our work and create with intention.
In hopes to becoming an art educator, Baylee aims to encourage purpose and meaning for her future students and provide a healthy, creative environment to express their emotion within their artwork.

Despina Zografos is a visual artist, born and raised in Greece currently living and working in New York. Despina works in a variety of mediums including hand cut paper, acrylic painting, cyanotype, solar plate etching, photography, video and has received awards for he work.
In 2022 she was a mentee at NYFA International Immigrant Artist Program and a Resident Artist at the Art League of Long Island, Dix Hills, NY. I recently went on a trip to Yellowstone with my family for the first time. This trip was more than a vacation for me. I was on the hunt for inspiration. I wanted to find a purpose, and direction that I felt was lacking in my life. I was also in search of a theme for my paintings. On our way we stopped in Ellensburg, at the Yellow Church Café, and I was struck by the stain glass artwork on display. Stain glass is an art form I have always loved and admired, and then I suddenly realized I had my theme. I was looking for a way to see inside myself and discover what I’m all about, and if a large part of who we are is the sum of our values then a window theme made sense to me. Each painting tries to represent the different aspects of each ValYou and how they all come together to make something beautiful. They aren’t perfectly symmetrical, and clean. There are flawed with touches of color that may seem out of place. For me the imperfection is part of what makes them interesting. I imagine my paintings as windows of a mind sanctuary where I can go and explore what it means to be me. I’m pretty happy with how they turned out.

Picasso. This quote shows the power art can hold. It can help you deal with a hard day, relieve stress, and express yourself. Art removes you from your current world and offers an escape. My piece “The Power of Art” was created by allowing my consciousness to flow which helped me
relieve stress. It is not a representational piece but an exercise in expression that allowed me to shed the day and relax.
Biography
Art has always been important to me. In times of stress I often turn to art as a means of relaxation, joy, or escape. As an educator I want kids to be open, resourceful, and creative and I believe art fosters these attributes. As an educator I try to let the students lead as much as possible. I try to say yes as often as possible. I teach film and videography to middle school students and I never want to say no to their creativity. ‘Yes and’ allows us to expand and move forward in growth instead of stunting their process or embarrassing them. There is no wrong way to do art. This is what I hope to instill in my students.

I selected this quote because many times, artists use inspiring quotes to plead the case for the value of the arts, but what about the quotes that are the ones bashing the arts? Artists can fight for the arts over and over again, but as we fight, we need to change the negative opinion of the pessimists who say quotes like “The arts are nice but not essential to education or to life.” Everywhere we look is a form of art, and it needs to be appreciated and supported rather than undermined and ignored.
Biography
Growing up near New York City, I have spent my childhood visiting museums and falling in love with art. My love for art grew in high school where I was lucky enough to receive a Distinction of the Arts diploma and continue down that path to receive my BFA in Art Therapy from Endicott College. As an artist, my interests include the themes of self identity, freedom of expression, and creating art to fulfill one’s happiness. I believe making art is about the process rather than the product. If we are always creating to please others, we lose ourselves as artists and the love for the craft. As an aspiring art educator, I hope to instill this in my students and be their biggest supporter. If it weren’t for self expression, the world would become a dull sense of reality lacking in originality and creativity.

I wanted to experiment. After reading Jessica Hoffmann Davis’ work I started to think about what it was like as a child creating. Not seeing rules, just making, and waiting to see how it would turn out. Never having used embroidery floss like this it was an interesting process breaking through the thick watercolor paper. I knew I wanted to use watercolors because of how fluid and unpredictable they can be, I embraced their nebulous nature.
Biography
As an artist and teacher I try to embrace imperfection. Rather than putting undue pressure on myself and stifling my creativity I let myself play. I don’t worry about mistakes, and try to encourage my students to work from a place of discovery and positivity. I think this outlook comes from growing up with a learning disability, where “simple” tasks were a chance to fail and I would just run at them all head on. Images were my way of expressing myself, but also how I understood the world for a large portion of my childhood.

I wanted to use Elliot Eisner’s quote “The arts celebrate multiple perspectives. One of their large lessons is that there are many ways to interpret the world.” as a way to show the ties between science and art, specifically paleontology. I wanted to show how artists have used scientific knowledge that was current at the time, to display the fossils of extinct creatures. I have drawn one of the first dinosaurs ever discovered, megalosaurus as it was described in 1824, and then I drew a comparison for what megalosaurus looks like in 2023.

I was first inspired by NIkki Giovanni's quote as I was researching the right words for this assignment. I was not too familiar with her work so when I investigated more I found an American poet, a writer, activist and educator. One of the world's well known African American poets. Her work includes storytelling, poetry anthologies, poetry recordings, covering ranges of
topics from race and social issues to children's literature. She also published an amazing set of poems, along with Illustrator and artist, Ashley Bryn in 2018, called I Am Loved. Like many of us, she gets her inspiration based on the facts in her life experiences.
I found so many great quotes by NIkki Giovanni. The quote I finally chose resonated with me because I always find art to retreat to. It has always been somewhere I can go and kind of hide. Whether it was singing my heart out and allowing my emotions to burst out in song to even this assignment. Helping me open my eyes and discovering artists and educators that are making such a positive impact.

Katlego is a visual artist based in Johannesburg. Initially embarking on a career in accounting, he quickly realized that its confines stifled his creative spirit. In 2019, Katlego decided he no longer wanted to be an accountant and wholeheartedly embraced graphic design as a self-taught discipline. I am a Fine Artist living on Long Island, New York. I graduated from the University of
Southern California, Roski School of Art & Design. I majored in Fine Art with an
emphasis in Oil Painting and a minor in Cinematic Arts as well as Psychology. With a strong love for film and a particular interest in psychology, I explore the psychological effects that arise in the visual design choices of art through colorful, immersive, and conceptually narrative art. I strive to create cinematic scenes in my paintings that appeal to the viewer's senses and evoke feelings of nostalgia. My artwork is inspired by nature and our connection to the Earth, as well as the beauty of life. I am very passionate about art and I love sharing that passion with my students. I am currently teaching art at One River School of Art + Design and pursuing my Masters in Art Education at Adelphi University.

I don't know if there is a recipe for creating a movement, however, I thought this art show would be a key ingredient to move in that direction. Creating positive products and encouraging other artists to express the ValYous was a key motivator.
My artwork is about expressing energy with the rhythm of color and movement of brush strokes. While I tend to do abstract work normally, the paintings in this show were intended to complement the metal ValYou symbols. As a result, they were inspired by the ValYou and color; however, it was a very intuitive right brain process. With that said, I did try to have a centering
element in the art to give the eye something to focus. This was obviously not the case with the random pattern paintings.
The process was somewhat methodical to do all 49 symbols. I did them in order, starting with Acceptance. I generally listened to music (that seemed to connect with each ValYou set), however, this was more based on my mood and what randomly played for me. Each of the metal
8 x 8 ValYou tiles also needed to be designed. I had help from Max Reyes, who arranged each ValYou with images of my artwork in Photoshop.
I felt like it was part of my purpose to make this show happen and Sheri Hauser added the vision to include the 7 other artists. It was a completion point after finalizing the last value in the set of 7. My goal was to make it a launching point and I am so happy to have the support and participation from the other artists. Driven by the dismal state of the community around her, her intent was to create art that serves and inspires all.
Her 15-year journey in the corporate world allowed her to work with huge brands such as Nickelodeon, Mattel, Marvel, Coca Cola, working in both 3d and 2d software as well as with physical print materials to create visual experiences that stir humanity to act.
Along this path, her strong desire for building healthy communities remained thus leading her to further her studies and self-study, this time in Iyengar yoga, Hypnotherapy and facilitation - leading to her collaboration with other wellness coaches to co-host outdoor yoga events and workshops and taking on various hypnotherapy clients suffering from addiction and poor self-worth.
Her online community, EarthborneYogi, is based on the 3 pillars of movement, thought & nature to bring well-being. The harmony of these allow us to re-discover our most natural and individual path to wellness.

Biography
Simone Franks (EarthBorneYogi) began her creative journey as a graphic artist in an impoverished area in Durban South Africa.
Driven by the dismal state of the community around her, her intent was to create art that serves and inspires all.
Her 15-year journey in the corporate world allowed her to work with huge brands such as Nickelodeon, Mattel, Marvel, Coca Cola, working in both 3d and 2d software as well as with physical print materials to create visual experiences that stir humanity to act.
Along this path, her strong desire for building healthy communities remained thus leading her to further her studies and self-study, this time in Iyengar yoga, Hypnotherapy and facilitation - leading to her collaboration with other wellness coaches to co-host outdoor yoga events and workshops and taking on various hypnotherapy clients suffering from addiction and poor self-worth.
Her online community, EarthborneYogi, is based on the 3 pillars of movement, thought & nature to bring well-being. The harmony of these allow us to re-discover our most natural and individual path to wellness.

The poster is inspired by an Elliot Eisner quote. I chose this quote because it gives an evocative statement with brevity. I wanted to make a piece about how art comes from the heart and that there's passion to be admired whether it is viewed as high brow or low brow art or created by a child or an adult. Each person's heart is different and the beauty of art is peering into the soul of the artists and seeing something different each time. I wanted to capture the chaotic beauty of experiencing art.

The quote I chose to inspire this poster is from Albert Einstein; "Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you anywhere." I believe this quote rings true now more than ever and not only speaks for value of the arts in the world but also speaks towards the value of embracing creativity and imagination. In a world where things are often binary, there needs to be a value on imagination to not only uplift others but to inspire generations to come.
Biography
Ash Nadeau comes from an illustration background having studied at Savannah College of Art and Design. She had a passion as an artist from an early age and decided to turn it into her career. While in college, Ash realized she had a passion for children's illustration whether it was for books, surface design, or textiles. For her, the power in children's illustration came from inspiring others and showing people there is so much possibility in the world. Along the way, Ash also realized she had developed a love for teaching and wanted to pursue the world of art education to do exactly what she aspired to with illustration. She firmly believes that art is at the foundation of the human experience and that everyone should have access to visual art as means to express themself and build connections with people around them. As an educator, Ash strives to show the world the important role art plays in life and wishes to show her students how powerful and deserving their voices are of being heard.

The quote I chose, from education researcher Elliot Eisner, inspired me because “artist’s block” is a real struggle that all creatives face, especially students who may not have confidence in their work. Inspired by classroom posters, the non-textual elements of this piece are meant to have an abstract, simplified style, telling the story of a boy finishing a piece of art to show others, ending with him receiving praise. I chose to use a monochromatic blue color scheme so that the starry background and the illustrations would evoke a cozy atmosphere, in contrast to the stark yellow of the text.

The quote, “The arts matter. They matter to education; they matter to society; and they will matter to you” inspired the creation of my piece for World Values Day. I used this quote to create multiple pieces, each focusing on a different medium. The piece above, Art Matters, is composed of a photograph of a trumpet, overlaid twice. The blending layers have been changed on Photoshop, and linear shapes of differing blending layers were added on top of the overlay. The quote was added in a similar fashion. My goal was to abstract common mediums, and to transform the photographs into more complex, multifaceted pieces. In this way I was able to show different uses of artistic mediums and styles to bolster the point of the quote, that art matters. This piece is composed of photography, music, graphic design, and illustration. I wanted to use many artistic mediums to prove that art can be anything, and it all has an important place in society.

The title of my work “Soul Honey” was inspired by the quote “Art is the honey of the soul” by Theodore Dreiser. Honey is the stored nectar for bees, it sustains them, protects them from bacteria and is necessary for their species survival. I immediately felt a connection to Dreiser’s quote. Art and its many expressions, has helped me process my way through life, through ups and downs and has been the nectar I live off of when things are hard. It provides light and inspiration to our spirits. Art helps us remember, it helps us heal and it is what our soul needs to thrive in the world.

This Silver Birch was painted when the world was locked down, which made us realise the preciousness of our environment and trees in particular.
Everyone has stood under a tree and looked up in wonder at the stature of an old tree, which dwarfs us and puts humans into perspective in the grand scheme of things.
Light falls across the front of the tree and dark shadows frame it, suggesting life is a balance and we must find balance in order to live fulfilled lives of respect for the dignity of life and for the generosity of Mother Nature.

Liz de Planta is a self-taught figurative artist who spent 25yrs as a documentary filmmaker before swapping her camera for a paintbrush.
Light is key to film and painting and Liz is constantly searching to reproduce the beauty light brings to life and to re-present it in a two dimensional form with the credibility to transport the viewer into the painting.
"Look up in Wonder" was copied from a photo Liz took and painted in the studio but Liz is now endeavouring to paint ‘en plein air’ - outdoors - which is ridiculously difficult, given how the light changes everything every second of the day.

This drawing shows what life is like in low income areas known as "townships" in South Africa. These areas are predominantly occupied by the black population of the country and are plagued by many societal ills such as alcoholism, extreme poverty and broken homes. Values of community and "ubuntu", which used to be integral to black communities in SA, are no longer held in high regard in these townships, perhaps because people are too disheartened to care. In this drawing, I aim to inspire our communities to bring these values back by showing what our lives in the townships are.

This painting questions the values of big corporations and food manufacturers, who continuously sell our communities food that has been proven to cause diseases and ultimately lead to death. Like drugs, these foods are addictive and destructive, but they are our main food supply. Through this painting, I urge governments to regulate the food industry in such a way that prioritises health and well-being instead of profits.

Vince welcomed the opportunity to do art again after years focusing on his family and growing his Mount Bakery business in Bellingham. He sees his work as a celebration of life and he refers to it as positive propaganda. Joyful expression of people and ecology uniting to create change is a central theme. Vince loves creative ideas and the process of creativity that makes you feel something. While there is a light-hearted tone to his work, there is always a story deeper below the surface in each of his pieces.

Weeping is a 8x6 small graphite drawing that consists of quick and jagged strokes and almost an impressionistic styling. I used a sort of repeated stroke and flick of the wrist movement that is supposed to represent sporadic leaves and the ‘Weeping’ tree.
In my ongoing continuous series I wanted to not only touch on my personal struggles, I wanted to be able to relate to not only my students with their struggles but genuinely be able to help them. In the small series, I wanted to show parts of the tree that sort of represent someone who is weeping or is sad, I personally look at my work every single day that remind me of my personal struggle with day to day activities. The simplicity of colors make the drawing look heavy, while the white space counter that heavy feeling. There is nothing in the drawing that you can focus on except the fact that someone is encapsulated by the tree. I wanted to highlight things in my drawings that one may see everyday, things that may not look like anything to you, but can be alarming to others.

My name is Gabrielle Kaufman, and I am a young artist based on Long Island. I am currently pursuing a Masters in Education, with the ultimate goal of becoming an art educator for upper-level high school students and college students. While I primarily use palette knives for my paintings, I consider myself primarily a sculptor and draftsman specializing in body casting and stained glass. This quote spoke to me because I believe imagination is more important than logic.
Imagination is the foundation of the arts. Art would be nothing without it. In my poster I drew the human brain. One side of my drawing contains the logic part of the quote with little to no color, and the other side has the imagination part of the quote. On this side I colored it in with all different colors to represent how imagination brings our mind joy. My poster is meant to represent the quote and the difference between logic and imagination.

“Art is for Everybody”, said by Keith Haring immediately became part of my teaching philosophy the first time I read it. Such a simple sentiment that truly carries so much weight. There are so many avenues that one can access and utilize the arts for themselves, their community, and humanity at large. Keith Haring believed that since all art, whether intentionally or not, is inspired by ones community, it therefore should be accessible to it. The openness of all that the art involves and can achieve is my biggest inspiration.
